How do you show true love for a vintage home?
Peel off architecturally ugly additions and return the home to its former dignity, bringing it up to date with all the amenities, and a historically appropriate design. A curved roof and covered porch tie together the new kitchen and master bath suites, and a carriage house style garage is added.
How do you retain the inherent charm and feel of a historic home, while updating its amenities and functionality?
Remove the back of the house and several disjointed additions. Add architecturally appropriate structures. Reconfigure the interior - relocating the kitchen centrally, optimizing the flow, size and usability of living spaces, while ensuring that historically appropriate details through out pull it all together.
How would you want to change your home if your elderly parents came to live with you?
For these clients, the changing dynamic necessitated changes to form, function and the flow of the home to make it suited for the four of them. A new handsome kitchen transforms the space yet honors the home’s pedigree and its creator’s original vision.
Is it true that nothing lasts forever?
Definately, in the case of ancient framing. An eye for historic detail while attending to the extensive structural repairs brought this home back to its 16th century roots and garnered our clients a Historical Preservation Award from the New Canaan Preservation Alliance.
When your house floods regularly, from an adjacent river, is raising the whole house the only and best solution?
Not necessarily. Clark Construction's alternative to eliminate all existing water entry points and build a new 2 ½ car garage above the flood line was a more cost effective solution. Project also included a new master bedroom suite atop the existing garage.
How do you find the balance between an open feel and feeling too open?
Use fun archways with heavy detailing to define the transitions between rooms. One is arched. Others are square. A media room was added, and the main living area opened up, successfully balancing the elegance of additional millwork with the warmth of a cottage space.
How do you design a master bath with no doors anywhere, yet provide privacy?
What a challenge! Glass-topped knee walls create private areas while providing visual continuity between the spaces. Top with a Japanese flair for beautiful room that reminds our clients of their idyllic years in the Far East.
How would you optimize and revitalize an 1800's home with a tiny kitchen and a deteriorating 1970’s indoor swimming pool?
Filling in the pool allowed us to create flexible family space with a playroom and guest quarters. An addition atop the pool houses a gourmet kitchen, family room and a mud entry. Detailing inside and out respects and builds upon the historic character of the original antique home.
“What you get from Clark is the complete deal. From great design guidance to flawless execution, the construction operation, and an office staff should you have any questions or need to get a hold of folks. I have talked to many of the contractors and they show a great amount of respect and loyalty to Clark as well, which also speaks highly of them.”
“Our Project Supervisor was the best. When I came home, I found him marking the newly finished hardwood floor with little sticky notes. It wasn't up to his high quality standards. I appreciate his attention to detail and the fact that he's on top of these things.”
“Our Project Supervisor's organization was tremendous. While managing it all, he always remained calm, which kept us comfortable! The workers at the house were all very respectful and were a pleasure to deal with. Work began every day when it was supposed to and went until the job was done. This was clearly beneficial to finishing our project on time.”
