Portfolio: Kitchens
A tired 70s Colonial was updated to create a kitchen and sunroom that are warm and welcoming. It’s a space that would be just as appropriate in a home twice this size, yet it feels “just right” where it is. While value engineering was done to keep costs in line, this exercise is transparent in the end product. You wouldn’t know they didn’t have an unlimited budget!
Our clients had a small home, with traditionally small public spaces. Although their budget precluded adding on, they wanted a Great Room, a new kitchen, a family TV room and a formal dining room. We were able to give them a lot for their money by staying inside the existing footprint: the new layout allows the home to flow better, and it feels visually larger.
The location of the kitchen and dining room were exchanged, and all walls between those rooms were removed. This switch gave room for a more spacious kitchen. Additionally this allowed us to open up the kitchen to a pre-existing sunroom that now functions as the family TV room. Cherry tops and bun feet create a furniture look for cabinets in the transitional area between the kitchen and dining room. The new rooms are functionally separate, but appear as a cohesive unit through the use of similar cabinetry, colors, and textures.
The sun-tan finish of the main kitchen cabinetry contrasts perfectly with the ocean-blue color of the cabinets in the center island. We used the same ocean-blue paint on the walls and in complementing glass tile on the backsplash to pull the whole kitchen together.
