The previous kitchen was lost in a wide shapeless and somewhat isolated space with tall ceilings that dwarfed the cabinetry.
We opened up the kitchen to the family room and addressed the client’s wish for “a kitchen with character” by taking advantage of the angularity of the room and pitched ceilings, adding value to those dimensions in our design. The clients are thrilled with how the new space works.
The dramatic cooking center is a visual focus and takes advantage of a 14’ ceiling at one end of the room. A large center island (with its integrated support column adds asymmetric interest) grounds the kitchen, and serves as a primary workspace. Heavy corbels and moldings on the island help balance the mass of the island against that of the cooking center. Complementing moldings and a variety of finishes create visual interest in the perimeter cabinets and sit-at bar, without competing with the dramatic elements of the kitchen.
