"A formerly dark cluttered kitchen in a modular home is opened up to the family room, creating a joyful mixed use space, where cooking and relaxing can occur simultaneously. It’s light and airy, everyone can be together and lightened up to become a joyful space, and the hub of this family’s time together ."

Challenge

A modular home with very thick walls, and a dark closed in kitchen needed opening up to an adjacent family room to bring the light in.    The goal was to create a more open gathering space with a kitchen capable of preparing meals for large family gatherings.

Since two sections of modular home came together between the great room and kitchen, removing any of this 10" wall meant extensive structural alterations.

Big posts and headers were needed. The posts were disguised with decorative columns with a lot of detailing. They look intentional!

Between them, a 13’ piece of walnut with a live edge serves as an informal eating area.

Opening up between the two rooms and making them contiguous changed how the spaces feel.

They have just the right balance of light filled and airy, and warm and welcoming. Plus great views!
